I’m starting to explore recreational shooting and home defense setups. I thought that with all the wisdom in this community, I could learn a few tricks to improve my collection. I’m also willing to share what’s effective for me in our dense brush and varied terrain. I enjoy sharing hunting stories, discussing ballistics or even talking about the best catfish bait. Im new here too, but been a gun nut my whole life. I enjoy shooting, whether its big bore magnums, long range single shots, steel silouette, or just plinking with 22s at cans or paper targets. Ive always been fascinated with ballistics and gun collecting. I enjoy handloading for many different calibers, and especially enjoy the old Smith and Wesson revolvers. I was reading Elmer Keith, Skeeter Skelton, and many of the other old timers as a kid from old issues of Guns and Ammo, Shooting times, and other gun magazines, way before the internet.
It didnt take me long to figure out I had to learn to reload if I wanted to shoot much. I worked at a tire shop as a kid, and the owner was a gun nut too. After work, I would ride with him to go feed the cows, and afterwards, we would pull up to a huge tank (some call it a pond) but it was full of turtles and snakes. Old Man Bill had a 9 1/2" Ruger single six 22, and hed sit and drink beer while I shot at snakes and turtles. Wheel weights were lead back then, and Id saved up for a Lyman bullet mold, 357429, which threw a 170 gr Keith style lead SWC. I already had a 4'' Highway Patrol model 28 Smith, and I credit Old Man Bill with turning me onto the Model 27, a gussied up model 28. Hed seen that I could hit turtles off a log at 50 to 60 yards, and one day, he reached under the seat an pulled out his 6 1/2 " Smith 27.......Well I was hooked.
I credit a lot to the old Ruger single six, it basically taught me the fundamentals of sighting, bullet drop, and gave me confidence to try longer range shooting. I still get a kick out of hitting a little 1 inch steel chicken or 3 inch ram
at 100 yds. My eyes aint as good as they once were, but I still love shooting.
