I'm planning a trip to Arkansas next month to catch up with a friend in Benton, and I'm super excited about spending a day fly fishing. I'm looking for a great spot where I can wade into the water, ideally within a couple of hours drive from the city. I'd really love to reel in some trout, but I'm happy to catch whatever bites on my fly rod.

I'm curious about what the water conditions are usually like in October. Do you think I'll need to bring waders alongor will I be okay without them?

I spent a few beautiful fall days fishing in the Little Red River near Heber Springs, and it’s one of my go to spots if you're within a couple of hours of Benton. The tailwaters below Greers Ferry Dam are super easy to get to, and the trout fishing during this time is usually fantastic. There are tons of public access points and plenty of great places to wade in especially when the generation schedules are light.

Mornings can be pretty chilly, and the water's definitely on the colder side, usually sitting in the low 50s. You might want to bring some waders. I’ve tried wet-wading in the afternoons when the sun is out, but it doesn’t take long before it starts to feel uncomfortable. With some breathable waders and good boots, your day on the water will be so much more enjoyable, and you'll be able to access all those prime fishing spots.
