Scope quality on a clear night

One night I pointed my rifle scope at the stars just to see what would happen. With a lower quality scope the stars looked distorted toward the edges and lost definition and with a higher quality scope they stayed sharp across the entire field of view. It sounds like an odd test but it actually reveals a lot about glass quality in a very honest way.

 Star testing optics can actually tell you a lot more than most people realize. Cheap glass starts to smear and lose its contrast around the edges almost immediately. The first time I ever looked through a pair of Swarovski binoculars under a perfectly clear night sky, that's when I truly understood why good glass comes with the price tag it does.

Star test is genuinely underrated for revealing edge distortion fast. Most people never think to try it but it shows you exactly what your glass is doing in about thirty seconds without any special equipment.
