Once fished a new river without a guide and got completely humbled

I thought trout water was trout water but I was wrong. Every river has its own personality, feeding lanes, hatches and holding spots. I caught two fish in five hours, while a guy downstream clearly knew the water and got a dozen. Local knowledge is everything.

I had a similar experience on the Madison River. I figured my skills from fishing in Pennsylvania would carry over. Spoiler: they didn’t. So, I hired a guide the next day and learned more in four hours than I had in two years of guessing. Some waters hold secrets you just can’t spot from the bank.
